Mawlamyine

Mawlamyine, Myanmar

Mawlayine is the third largest city in Myanmar after Yangon and Mandalay situated 165 kilometers east of the nation's capital across the Gulf of Mottama at the mouth of the Thanlyin River. It is the capital of Mon state with a population of almost 300,000 people and also a picturesque old colonial town once an important teak port. Places of interest in this area include the Mahamuni & Uzina pagoda, Kipling's Kyaikthanlan Pagoda and the Mon culture Museum. Nearby places of interest include Set-se Beach Kyaikhtami – a seaside resort with its Uele Pagoda perched over the sea and Thanbyuzayat where the cemetery for world war II's allied prisoners of war who died while building the infamous Death railway. Mawlamyine is generally considered to be off the main tourist trail for most travelers to Myanmar but the town does have a charm of its own with its rich history, buildings with colonial style architecture, World War II era wooden buses making it a fascinating place to visit!
