Bago( Pegu ) was an ancient capital of MON kings and it is only 80 km away from Yangon. It is just far enough to avoid many tourists. It was also the capital of second Myanmar Empire founded by warrior King BayinNaung. Interesting places in Bago are theShwe-Maw-Daw Pagoda ( over 1000 years old and it spire is even taller than the Great reclining Buddha image); Shwe –Tha-Lyaung( Great reclining Buddha image); KalayaniThein ( Ancient Ordination Hall for monk hood ); Kyaik-Pun Paya ( Four seated giant Buddha images placed back to back around a huge, square pillar ); and the Kanbawzathadi Palace ( housed by King Bayinnaung ).
