Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda known as ‘Golden Rock’, is only 5 hours drive northeast of Yangon. The magnificent ‘Golden Rock’ is an important place of pilgrimage for all Buddhists. It is famous because the small stupa sits atop Mt Kyaikto. The boulder maintains the balance precariously due to Buddha hair which is preserved inside the stupa.
Kyaikhtiyo can be reached either by car or train and it is only 160 km away from Yangon. First, arrive at a camp called Kinpun, and ride on of the large trucks up the winding road to the next camp. Yathetaung( about 45 minutes’ drive ), from where it takes another 45 minutes to walk uphill or you can take a ride again to Golden Rock. All the tiredness along the way disappears once one reaches the top since a spectacular view awaits there, especially at sunrise or sunset. From the top of the mountain, you can find out all the pagodas around the mountain.
