Amarapura – Ava is a fascinating travel route that connects two of Myanmar’s former royal capitals, offering a rich blend of history, culture, and tranquil countryside. Located near Mandalay, both Amarapura and Ava (Inwa) once served as powerful political and cultural centers, and today they provide travelers with a deeper understanding of Myanmar’s royal past and spiritual traditions.
Amarapura is best known for its serene atmosphere and important Buddhist institutions. The iconic U Bein Bridge, stretching gracefully across Taungthaman Lake, is a timeless symbol of the region. Built from teakwood in the 19th century, the bridge comes alive at sunrise and sunset as monks, villagers, and fishermen cross its long span. Nearby, the Mahagandayon Monastery stands as one of the largest monastic communities in Myanmar, where visitors can observe the daily life of monks and novices in an atmosphere of discipline and devotion.
Traveling from Amarapura to Ava leads visitors into a quieter, more rural landscape. Ava, once the seat of Burmese kings for centuries, is now a peaceful area dotted with ancient ruins, monasteries, and watchtowers. Exploring Ava often involves horse carts or bicycles, allowing travelers to move slowly and appreciate the surroundings. Among its highlights is the Bagaya Monastery, an impressive wooden structure supported by hundreds of teak pillars, showcasing exceptional traditional craftsmanship.
Another notable site in Ava is the Nanmyin Watchtower, a leaning remnant of the former royal palace that stands as a symbol of the city’s faded grandeur. Nearby, the Maha Aungmye Bonzan Monastery offers a contrast with its brick construction and elegant arches, reflecting architectural styles of the Ava period.
The journey between Amarapura and Ava is enriched by views of the Irrawaddy River, small villages, and farmland that reveal everyday life along Myanmar’s historic heartland. This route is not just about monuments but about experiencing the rhythm of rural Myanmar.
Amarapura – Ava offers a meaningful travel experience where history, spirituality, and tradition blend seamlessly. For those seeking insight into Myanmar’s royal heritage and peaceful landscapes, this journey provides an unforgettable glimpse into the country’s enduring cultural soul.
