Amarapura: Myanmar's "City of Immortality"
Just a short drive south of modern Mandalay lies the serene and historically rich township of Amarapura, a former royal capital of Myanmar whose name translates to the evocative "City of Immortality". Founded by King Bodawpaya in 1783, it served as the capital of the Konbaung Dynasty twice before King Mindon eventually moved the court to Mandalay in 1859.
Today, Amarapura is a captivating day-trip destination, offering a glimpse into a regal past and vibrant, enduring traditions.
Amarapura is also a significant centre for Buddhist scholarship and life. The Mahagandayon Monastery is one of the largest monastic schools in the country, home to over a thousand monks and novices. Visitors can respectfully observe the silent, single-file procession of monks collecting their final meal of the day each morning, a profound cultural experience.
Program:
After breakfast at your hotel, start your sightseeing at 8:00 AM. We will drive to Amarapura, which was the site of the first British embassy in Myanmar.
