Ava, also known as Inwa, is one of Myanmar’s most fascinating historical destinations, offering travelers a deep journey into the country’s royal past. Located on the banks of the Irrawaddy River, near Mandalay, Ava once served as the capital of several Burmese kingdoms for nearly four centuries. Though time and natural disasters have reduced much of the ancient city to ruins, its charm lies in its quiet atmosphere, scattered monuments, and strong sense of history.

Founded in 1364, Ava quickly became a political, cultural, and religious center of Upper Myanmar. Kings ruled from here, scholars wrote important literary works, and Buddhism flourished across the region. Today, visitors explore Ava not through busy streets, but via peaceful countryside paths, often by horse cart or bicycle, which adds to the timeless experience.

One of the most iconic landmarks in Ava is the Bagaya Monastery, a magnificent wooden structure built entirely from teak. Supported by hundreds of massive pillars, the monastery showcases traditional Burmese craftsmanship and once served as a center for Buddhist learning. Nearby, the Nanmyin Watchtower, also known as the “Leaning Tower of Ava,” stands as a reminder of the former royal palace. Its slight tilt and weathered appearance make it one of the most photographed spots in the area.

Another notable site is the Maha Aungmye Bonzan Monastery, often called Me Nu Oak Kyaung. Unlike most wooden monasteries, this one is built from brick and stucco, featuring elegant arches and detailed carvings. It reflects the architectural transition of the Ava period and remains remarkably well preserved.

Beyond its monuments, Ava offers visitors a peaceful rural setting. Fields, small villages, and river views surround the ruins, providing a glimpse into everyday life that has changed little over generations. The absence of heavy crowds makes Ava ideal for slow, thoughtful exploration.

Ava (Inwa) is more than just a collection of ancient structures; it is a place where history feels alive. For travelers interested in Myanmar’s heritage, culture, and architecture, Ava provides a meaningful and memorable experience that quietly reveals the grandeur of its royal past.
