Discovering Thanlyin: Yangon's Historic Neighbor
Just a short trip across the Bago River from Myanmar's bustling capital lies Thanlyin, a town rich in history and serene charm. Once a major trading port known as Syriam, it has seen Mon kings, Portuguese adventurers like Filipe de Brito e Nicote, and British colonial rule.
Today, this peaceful suburb offers a captivating blend of cultural experiences and stunning spiritual sites, making it an ideal day trip from Yangon.
The highlight for many is the Kyauktan Pagoda, also known as the Yele Paya, a magnificent temple complex built on a small island in the river. A short, scenic ferry ride takes you to this floating sanctuary, where you can admire intricate carvings and feed the numerous, tame catfish in the surrounding waters. The impressive Kyaik Khauk Pagoda, a golden stupa similar in style to the Shwedagon Pagoda, is another must-visit, perched on a hillock with panoramic views.
Beyond the pagodas, visitors can explore the quiet ruins of an old Portuguese church, wander through vibrant local markets offering unique souvenirs and delicious street food, and simply soak in the tranquil, riverside atmosphere. Connected by one of Myanmar's longest bridges, Thanlyin is an accessible hidden gem waiting to be explored. Don't miss this journey through history and local culture!
